Divi SEO settings, plugins, speed and what changes in Divi 5

Divi SEO comes down to settings and habits, because Divi doesn't stop a WordPress site ranking but its defaults and build habits can. This guide covers the Theme Options I change on Divi sites, which SEO plugin to pair it with, how to set up social cards, breadcrumbs and schema through that plugin, and what to check before and after moving to Divi 5.

the short answer
$ divi seo ✓ Divi is fine for SEO once one SEO plugin handles titles, meta, social cards and schema, and Divi's own SEO tab is switched off.✓ Most Divi SEO problems are heading levels, content duplicated for phones, heavy first screens, and performance options switched off after a plugin conflict.✓ Rank Math, Yoast, AIOSEO and SEOPress all work with Divi; pick the one the site already runs, never run two, and check it reads Divi 5 content before you upgrade.
// 01 - the short version

Is Divi good for SEO?

Divi SEO works when the builder is set up with search in mind. Divi, the theme and visual builder from Elegant Themes, prints normal HTML that Google can crawl and render, so the theme itself isn't the problem. What hurts Divi sites is how they're usually built: two sets of meta tags, headings picked for their size instead of their level, whole sections copied for phones, and a stack of modules loading CSS and JavaScript the page never uses. When a site needs more than settings, that's where page builder SEO fixes for Elementor and Divi come in.

Each of those is a setting or a habit, not a flaw you're stuck with. Fix them and a Divi site can rank as well as any other WordPress site. One thing that won't help: a Divi SEO template from the Elegant Themes marketplace is a child theme designed for SEO agency websites, not a setting that improves rankings.

// 02 - pros and cons

What are the pros and cons of Divi for SEO?

Judged only on search, this is how Divi weighs up. The cons are all fixable, but they're the defaults and habits you inherit with a Divi build.

In Divi's favour

  • Crawlable HTML, with tab and toggle content printed in the page
  • Built-in performance options: Dynamic CSS, Critical CSS and jQuery deferral
  • Works with Rank Math, Yoast, AIOSEO and SEOPress
  • Theme Builder templates fix headings on every post at once

Against it, until you fix it

  • The SEO tab doubles up tags when a plugin's also active
  • Heading levels are picked per module, so they drift
  • Device visibility makes duplicate sections easy to build
  • Sliders, animation and big modules slow the first screen
  • Some SEO plugins' content analysis can't read Divi 5 content yet

Which Divi SEO settings matter, and what should they be?

These live under Divi, Theme Options, and inside each module's settings. Change one at a time, and check the live page after each.

Which Divi SEO settings matter, and what should they be?
SettingWhere it isWhat I set it to
Homepage, single post and index SEOTheme Options, SEO tabOff when an SEO plugin is active, so titles, descriptions and canonicals come from one place
Enable canonical URLsTheme Options, SEO tabOff when the SEO plugin prints canonicals, so the page has exactly one

What is the best SEO plugin for Divi?

The best SEO plugin for Divi is usually the one already installed. Switching costs more than any feature gap between them, and the SEO plugin roundup compares six. If you're choosing fresh between the two most common, how I choose between Rank Math and Yoast walks through it.

i.

Rank Math

Elegant Themes' integration page says its settings open from a Rank Math button in the visual builder's page settings bar. It adds schema types without extra plugins. On Divi 5, check its content analysis first (see below).

ii.

Yoast SEO

Works with Divi for titles, descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps and breadcrumbs. Its content checks are a guide; they aren't a ranking score.

iii.

AIOSEO

Advertises a live analysis panel inside the Divi Builder, so you can edit SEO fields while you design, and covers the same core settings.

iv.

SEOPress

Its free version has a universal SEO metabox for editing the title, description and URL while you're working in Divi, and it generates Open Graph tags automatically.

v.

Divi's own SEO tab

Handles titles, descriptions and canonicals for the homepage and posts. Fine alone, but it duplicates any SEO plugin, so switch it off when one's active.

// 05 - step by step

How do you set up Divi SEO, step by step?

  1. i.

    Install one SEO plugin

    Then turn off the SEO tab under Theme Options, and check the page source shows there's one title, one meta description and one canonical.

  2. ii.

    Set the social title, description and image

    Divi's SEO tab documentation lists titles, descriptions, keywords and canonicals, nothing for social cards, so Open Graph comes from the plugin: Rank Math has a Social tab in the same overlay, and SEOPress builds the tags automatically. Set a default share image so every page has one.

  3. iii.

    Turn on breadcrumbs and schema in the plugin

    In Rank Math, enable breadcrumbs under General Settings, Breadcrumbs, then drop [rank_math_breadcrumb] into your post template; Yoast's shortcode is [wpseo_breadcrumb]. Setting up breadcrumbs in WordPress covers placement. Pick schema types in the plugin, and skip the FAQ schema step some Divi tutorials still include: Rank Math's own Divi article notes Google no longer shows a rich result for it.

  4. iv.

    Fix heading levels in the Theme Builder

    The Post Title module in your post template should be the H1. Every other heading module on the template shouldn't go above H2.

  5. v.

    Check the performance options

    Dynamic CSS, Critical CSS, deferred jQuery and better Google Fonts loading, tested one by one, and switched back on if a past conflict turned them off.

  6. vi.

    Give every image module alt text

    Describe what the image shows. Decorative background images don't need it, and they can't carry it anyway.

  7. vii.

    Remove device duplicates

    Rebuild sections that exist twice, once for desktop and once for phones, as one responsive section.

  8. viii.

    Check the result like Google does

    URL Inspection's live test for the rendered HTML, and PageSpeed Insights for field data on real phones.

// 06 - speed

Does Divi slow down your website?

It can. A Divi page with dozens of modules, several Google Fonts, sliders and animation loads more than a hand-built page, and on a mid-range phone that shows up as a slow Largest Contentful Paint. Elegant Themes' performance release added Dynamic CSS, Critical CSS, jQuery deferral and Google Fonts caching to cut most of that, and it says the jQuery option can be disabled if it causes problems. An option switched off after a conflict doesn't switch itself back on, so I check each one instead of assuming it's on.

What's left is usually the build itself: a full-width slider as the hero, entrance animations on the first screen, and images uploaded at camera size. Those are layout choices, and they're where most of the Core Web Vitals work on a Divi site goes.

// speed in brief
Dynamic CSSloads only the styles the page's modules use
Critical CSSstyles the first screen and defers the rest
Deferred jQuerymoves jQuery to the footer when nothing needs it early
// 07 - divi 5

What changes for Divi SEO in Divi 5, and what should you test?

Elegant Themes says it rebuilt Divi 5 from the ground up with a focus on performance, replaced shortcodes with a Gutenberg-like system, and made the upgrade a single click that keeps Divi 4 legacy modules working. The new content format matters for SEO plugins, because they have to read it to score a page. In May 2026, Rank Math's support team said on WordPress.org that the plugin was "currently unable to properly read content added using Divi 5", and that this affected its SEO score and content analysis, not the site's actual SEO performance. Check your plugin's changelog before you trust its score on a Divi 5 page.

  1. i.

    Before the upgrade, record a baseline

    Search Console clicks and impressions for the top pages, and PageSpeed Insights field data for the templates that matter.

  2. ii.

    Check the head of one page per template

    One title, one meta description, one canonical, and the Open Graph tags, exactly as before.

  3. iii.

    Check heading levels

    Upgraded modules should keep their heading levels; confirm the post template still prints one H1.

  4. iv.

    Read the rendered HTML

    URL Inspection's live test on a converted page shows whether the main content is there without clicks or scripts.

  5. v.

    Compare after four weeks

    Field data needs time to collect, so judge speed and clicks against the baseline once it has.

// 08 - mobile first

Should you hide modules on mobile with Divi's visibility settings?

Only for decoration. Google indexes the mobile version of a page, and a section hidden with Divi's Disable on setting is still in the HTML, so it isn't really hidden from Google. When a site builds one hero for desktop and a second for phones, Google reads both: two H1s, the same paragraph twice, two sets of buttons. One responsive section with phone-specific spacing and font sizes does the same job without the duplicate.

Tabs, toggles and accordions are different. Divi prints their content in the page, so Google can read what's inside a closed tab. Keep the main answer on the page anyway, where a visitor sees it without clicking.

// 09 - templates

How do Divi Theme Builder templates affect SEO?

i.

Global header and footer

They appear on every page, so keep their headings out of the H1 and H2 range and their links to the pages that matter.

ii.

Post and page templates

One template controls the heading structure of every post. Fix it there and you've fixed hundreds of pages at once.

iii.

Category and archive templates

Add the category description to the template, so archive pages carry text instead of a bare grid of posts.

// 10 - diy or help

What can you fix yourself, and when do you need help?

Settings are a DIY job. Templates that have gone wrong across hundreds of posts are builder work, and slow templates on real phones are Core Web Vitals work.

Usually a DIY job

  • Turning off Divi's SEO tab and keeping one plugin
  • Setting social cards and breadcrumbs in the plugin
  • Switching the performance options back on
  • Alt text and heading levels in modules

Worth handing over

  • Templates that print two H1s across hundreds of posts
  • LCP still poor on phones after the settings are right
  • Rebuilding device-duplicated layouts without losing rankings
  • A Divi 5 upgrade on a site that earns most of its leads from search

// questions

What else do people ask about Divi SEO?

Is Elementor or Divi better for SEO?

Neither wins on its own. Both print HTML Google can read, and both get slow when a page carries too many modules or widgets. The better choice is the one your site's already built with, set up properly; the Elementor SEO guide covers the same checks for the other builder.

How much does Divi cost?

Elegant Themes sells Divi on a yearly plan or as a one-time lifetime purchase, and its pricing page advertises unlimited websites and says "Try Divi risk-free for 30 days". The figures change with promotions, so read the current price on elegantthemes.com/join/ on the day you buy.

Does Divi have built-in SEO settings?

Yes. The SEO tab under Theme Options sets custom titles, meta descriptions and canonical URLs for the homepage, single posts and index pages. An SEO plugin does the same with more control, so don't run both.

Can I use Yoast SEO or Rank Math with Divi?

Yes, either works. Pick one, turn off Divi's own SEO tab, and check the page source shows a single title and meta description. On Divi 5, confirm the plugin's content analysis reads your Divi content before relying on its score.

Is Divi 5 better than Divi 4 for SEO?

Elegant Themes built Divi 5 with a focus on performance, and faster pages help. There's no new SEO setting, though, so test your own templates in PageSpeed Insights before and after moving, and check your SEO plugin supports Divi 5.

Where do these rules come from?

Google's own documentation, plus what I see on the WordPress sites I work on. Written by Muhammad Younus, a WordPress technical SEO consultant.

// from the blog

On a Divi site, two metrics are worth checking beside the settings above, and each has its own post: Cumulative Layout Shift from fonts and module loading, and a slow Largest Contentful Paint on the hero. Clearing every cache layer covers edits that won't show, and the speed and Core Web Vitals posts cover the rest.
