Medical SEO for WordPress clinics
Medical SEO, also called healthcare SEO, gets a clinic found by nearby patients: a crawlable WordPress site, a page per location and doctor, hours in text and pages written to CPSA's advertising standard. In most Alberta towns the #1 clinic sits under four stars, and CPSA doesn't allow testimonials on your own site, so I make your hours, walk-in status and new-patient status readable instead.

Google Business Profile for clinics: why is #1 under four stars in 20 of 31 towns?
On 8 September 2026 I measured the map pack for 30 verticals in 31 Alberta towns. A typical town's #1 clinic has 56 reviews and a 3.7 rating, and in 26 towns it isn't the most-reviewed clinic in its pack. It's the first thing I check as a local SEO consultant for a clinic: whether the Business Profile, the site and the posted hours agree.
Stars aren't settling who ranks first, and a patient who needs care today wants to know who's open. CPSA also counts reviews on your own site as testimonials, which it doesn't allow.
Authority for a clinic comes from real ties, not bought ones: the clinic listed the same way on every directory, and links from the hospitals, associations and community programmes its doctors already work with. Google treats buying links for ranking as link spam, so I won't buy any.
Healthcare SEO keyword research: why do patients search for a clinic that's open?
Keywords Everywhere, Canada, pulled 26 September 2026. Patients search by need and place: walk in clinic, family doctor, accepting new patients, each with the city. Walk-in clicks cost C$1 or less in Calgary and Edmonton: people want care today.
Open right now
Edmonton adds 9,900. Hours and walk-in status belong in text, not an image.
Taking new patients
Calgary's wording returned 0, a phrasing gap. A dated status line per doctor answers it.
A falling search
It fell from 3,600 to 1,900 over the year, and volume can't say why.
Which does your site answer?
Send me the URL. I'll tell you which ones it can't answer yet.
Medical SEO services: where do clinic websites fail patients and crawlers?
Every clinic job starts the same way: I crawl the site, compare what Google has indexed with the locations and doctors you actually have, and check each page on a phone. Each fixed-scope service below fixes one part of what that turns up. If the budget's tight, I'd go in this order: hours and walk-in status in text that matches the profile, a page per location and doctor, a CPSA read of the copy you've got, then condition pages.
What does SEO for doctors and clinics need that dental SEO doesn't?
Walk in, call or book, never a symptom form
Patients walk in, call or use your EMR's booking tool. I tag each booking click to the page that sent it, so you'll know.
MedicalClinic and IndividualPhysician markup
MedicalClinic carries each location's hours and isAcceptingNewPatients, kept current. Each doctor gets IndividualPhysician under their registered name, with practicesAt naming the clinic.
The Medical Director answers for the ads
CPSA's advice says the Medical Director can be held responsible for ads that break the standard, even ones a marketing firm wrote. So you'll sign off on everything.
A higher bar for health pages
Google's rater guidelines treat health as YMYL. Each page gets a registered author and MedicalWebPage with lastReviewed, and condition pages come the same way: reviewed and dated by a named physician.
What does CPSA's advertising standard mean for your website?
My plain reading of CPSA's Advertising standard and Advice to the Profession (March 2021). It isn't legal advice.
Agreed with you before anything's published
- Services AHCIP may not fund, which must be said (1(g))
- Comparative claims, only if substantiated (4(b))
- Practice interests, never as a protected title (5(b))
- Form fields, since the Health Information Act covers the health details patients type in
Built into every page I write
- No testimonials, including reviews on your own site (1(i))
- No review widgets: Google won't show stars for reviews you control
- No guarantees or unreasonable expectations (1(j))
- No coupons, prizes or time-limited prices (4(c))

The closest I've published isn't a clinic. It's a multi-location therapy practice on WordPress.

Six are top heavy, fourteen contested. Mature isn't closed either: Red Deer's #1 had 8 reviews while a clinic lower down held 331.
The cities aren't settled by stars either. Calgary's #1 clinic is rated 3.3 and Edmonton's 3.1, and Calgary's #1 has 438 reviews while another clinic holds 706, so hours, walk-in status and location pages carry more weight there than a rating can.

Medical SEO questions, answered
Is medical SEO the same as healthcare SEO?
Mostly. Healthcare SEO is the wider term, covering hospitals, health brands and publishers. Medical SEO, as I use it, means a clinic or a doctor's practice: locations, doctors, hours and the pages patients use to decide where to go.
How much does medical SEO cost for a clinic?
An audit's $149, audit plus fixes $999, and ongoing work $299 or $750 a month. A group of clinics gets a written quote on Upwork.
Can my clinic show Google reviews on its site?
Not as I read CPSA's advice: reviews on your own site or social media count as testimonials, which it doesn't allow. Reviews on Google itself don't.
How does a clinic show up for walk in clinic near me?
Exact Business Profile hours, a page per location with today's hours in text, and tap-to-call. Distance still decides a lot, and I'll say so.
Should each doctor have their own page?
Yes, if they see patients: registered name, core training, practice interests worded the CPSA way, and whether they're taking patients. Leavers' pages redirect.
How long does medical SEO take?
Give on-page fixes four to eight weeks before a first honest review, since each changed page needs a recrawl. The map pack moves slower, and I won't put a date on it. I've written up how long SEO takes to work, with the data behind it.
Can a clinic show up in Google's AI Overviews?
Google says there are "no additional requirements" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. So it's the same work, done well: hours in crawlable text, a named reviewing doctor and a dated page.
Should a clinic write pages about conditions it treats?
Yes, if a named physician reviews and dates each one, and it describes what the clinic does without promising an outcome, which CPSA doesn't allow (1(j)). It also gives a patient who searches the problem, not the clinic, a way in.
