SEO for dentists on WordPress

SEO for dentists is the work that gets a practice found for a dentist, a treatment or an emergency: a WordPress site Google can crawl, a page for each thing patients search, and details that match your Business Profile. Alberta's dental map pack is the deepest of the 30 I measured, so I won't sell you a review race. I build the pages you can still win.

// the map pack - deepest in alberta

Why can't a newer practice win the review race?

I measured the Google map pack for 30 local verticals in 31 Alberta towns on 8 September 2026. Dentists came out deepest: a typical town's #1 practice has 441 reviews, and Calgary's has 3,300. In Grande Prairie's dental pack the #1 practice holds 848. No town was wide open, and Edmonton's dentist pack is on my Edmonton WordPress SEO page.

A practice that opened last year won't out-review a Calgary leader on 3,300, which is why SEO in Calgary for a dentist starts below the pack. In 17 of the 31 towns, #1 isn't the most-reviewed practice in its own pack, so distance, relevance and the website still count. That's where the work goes.

// dentists, reviews on the #1 listing
441median across 31 Alberta towns, measured 2026-09-08
366Calgary region, 9 towns
606.5Edmonton region, 8 towns
370Central region, 6 towns
255South region, 3 towns
848North region, 5 towns
// the searches a practice can win

Which searches can a newer practice actually win?

Three kinds of dental search sit outside the pack's review count, and each needs its own page. Figures are Keywords Everywhere, Canada, 26 September 2026.

// emergency 2,400 a month for emergency dentist calgary, and the same in Edmonton

Emergency visits

C$15.08 a click in Calgary, the costliest here. The page needs today's hours in HTML and a number that dials on tap.

// dental plans 1,600 a month for alberta dental plan

Dental plan questions

"canadian dental care plan dentist" fell from about 1,000 last September to 210 in August. One page on which plans you direct-bill answers both.

// treatments 1,000 a month each for implants and one aligner brand in Calgary

Treatment pages

Implants peak in February and aligners in summer. One page per treatment stops them fighting for the same queries.

// your site

What do I fix on a dental practice's WordPress site?

Fixed-scope services, and what each one means on a dental site.

/local Local SEO Service and town pages, and practice details that match your Google Business Profile. /schema Schema markup Dentist markup with real hours, each dentist as a Person, and no self-served stars. /overlap Keyword cannibalization Implant, implant cost and full-arch pages untangled, so one page owns each query. /copies Duplicate content and canonicals Vendor treatment copy that's word for word on other practices' sites, found and rewritten. /speed Core Web Vitals Video heroes and heavy galleries that push mobile LCP past four seconds, fixed.

How do you do SEO for dentists on WordPress?

// profile and bookings

Business Profile, listings, then two tracked booking paths

Primary category Dentist, hours identical to the site's, emergency hours only if you keep them, and the same name, address and phone on every directory listing. Google says complete and accurate details help a practice show locally. On the site, a patient in pain gets tap-to-call; a new patient gets the booking widget with accepted plans beside it. Each booking's tracked in GA4, and Search Console shows which page earned the visit.

// pages and answers

A page per treatment, plan and emergency

Emergency, dental plan and treatment pages each answer one search. Hours, accepted plans and whether you're taking new patients go in plain text, not popups. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization, so text Google can read is also what AI answers can quote. Links come from the local teams and events you already sponsor, not bought lists.

// reviews and the cdsa

Reviews asked for, claims you can stand behind

Ask every patient the same way with Google's review link, never for a discount: Google's policy bars incentives and asking only happy patients. Showing testimonials on your own site is a separate question. The CDSA holds owner, responsible and associate dentists accountable for their advertising, even when a third party writes it, so I only write claims you can stand behind.

// schema

Dentist markup, not generic Organization

The schema.org Dentist type carries real hours, emergency hours only if you keep them, and isAcceptingNewPatients, true only while it's true. It's the part of my schema markup services dental sites miss most. No aggregateRating: Google won't show stars for reviews you control.

// what the cdsa lets a dental site say

What's your dental website allowed to say?

My plain reading of the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta's Advertising Statement (November 2023). It isn't legal advice.

// check first

Checked with you before it goes live

  • Patient testimonials: the statement doesn't mention them, so they're a Code of Ethics question
  • Specialist wording for a general dentist
  • Aligner and implant brand names, until the device's licence is confirmed
  • Star widgets. Google won't show stars for reviews you control
// built in

Built into every page I write

  • Nothing untruthful or capable of misleading the public (Health Professions Act, s. 102)
  • Dental titles used only by regulated members (s. 128(5)(a))
  • Prescription drugs named by brand, proper or common name, price and quantity only (C.01.044)
  • No Class II to IV device advertised for sale unless Health Canada has licensed it (Medical Devices Regulations, s. 27)

Why no dental case study yet?

I won't borrow another industry's result and call it dental. The closest I've published is a health practice on WordPress, shown for its town pages and missing clinic markup.

SEO for dentists: your questions, answered

How long does SEO take for a dental practice?

A changed page needs a recrawl, and Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Emergency and plan pages are the first I'd check in Search Console. The pack's a longer game in a vertical this deep, and no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, so I won't give you a date.

How much does dental SEO cost?

My packages are fixed: US$149 for the audit, US$999 for the audit and fixes, or US$299 or US$750 a month for ongoing work. A multi-location group gets a quote on Upwork.

Can a dental website show testimonials in Alberta?

The CDSA's 2023 statement doesn't mention them, so I don't treat them as allowed. Check the Code of Ethics first. Google won't show stars for reviews you control anyway.

How do I rank for emergency dentist searches?

One emergency page saying when you can see someone today, with hours in the HTML and a tap-to-call number, linked from the homepage and every treatment page.

Should a dentist use Google Ads or SEO?

Often both. Ads buy emergency clicks today, at around C$15 each in Calgary. SEO builds pages that keep earning them without a per-click cost, and I'll say where that pays off.

What's the difference between dental SEO and local SEO?

Local SEO is the profile and town side: category, listings and a page per location. Dental SEO adds what only a practice needs: emergency and plan pages, Dentist markup and copy the CDSA would accept.
