Veterinary SEO for WordPress clinics

Veterinary SEO gets a clinic found by pet owners on Google: the map pack for routine care, and a page each for emergency, exotic and farm-call searches, with calls and portal clicks tracked. I do it on WordPress. Alberta's vet pack is the second deepest of the 30 I measured, so I work where the pack doesn't decide: after-hours searches, species pages and hours that match.

// the map pack - second deepest in alberta

Google Business Profile for vets: where do reviews really decide the pack?

I pulled Google map packs for 30 verticals across Alberta on 8 September 2026. In the 30 towns with a vet pack, the #1 clinic's median is 393.5 reviews, second only to dentists at 441, and 27 packs are mature.

Reviews and rank move together: #1 is also the most-reviewed clinic in 18 of 30 towns, against 7 of 31 for chiropractors and physios and 6 of 31 for med spas. A new clinic won't close that gap in a year, so the plan starts elsewhere.

On the profile itself, the list is short and it's the same for every clinic: hours that match the site, holidays included; services listed by species; photos of the real clinic; and every review answered without sharing anything about the pet or its owner.

Veterinary SEO keyword research: which three searches do services pages miss?

I sort a clinic's keywords by species, service and urgency: dogs and cats, exotics, farm animals, dental, surgery and after-hours, each with the town. The three below each need their own page, built only if you offer it. Keywords Everywhere, Canada, 26 September 2026.

// after hours 1,600 a month for emergency vet calgary, level with vet calgary

Emergency and after-hours

In Edmonton it's 1,900, over half the plain vet search. Calgary's full packs are on my SEO consultant in Calgary page. A day clinic's page states its hours and where to go tonight.

// species 170 a month for exotic vet calgary, 90 in Edmonton

Exotics and cat-only care

cat clinic calgary adds 110. Small, but a page listing every service won't rank for any of them.

// farm and house calls 320 a month for large animal vet near me, Canada-wide

Large animal and mobile

mobile vet calgary gets 260. None of the page-one vet SEO pages I read in Canada covers farm calls.

// wordpress seo services - for a vet clinic

Which veterinary SEO services does a clinic's WordPress site need?

Fixed-scope services, read the way a clinic's site needs them.

/local Local SEO Regular, holiday and after-hours times identical on the site, the profile and the markup. /schema Schema markup VeterinaryCare paired with LocalBusiness, so your hours validate. /copies Duplicate content and canonicals Vendor pet-health articles sitting word for word on other clinics' sites, found and rewritten. /move Site migration Moving off a vendor template you can't edit, with every old URL redirected. /audit Technical SEO audit Team pages saved as images, so your vets' names and credentials aren't readable text. /speed WordPress speed Pet portal and chat scripts deferred, so the phone number and today's hours load first.

// what's different - veterinary sites

What does a vet clinic's site need that a dentist's doesn't?

// phone, then portal

A call when it's urgent, a portal otherwise

A worried owner phones, so the number dials on tap beside today's hours. New clients often register in a pet portal on another domain, so I track those clicks against new-client counts.

// the type trap

VeterinaryCare can't carry your hours alone

schema.org files VeterinaryCare under MedicalOrganization, not LocalBusiness, and openingHoursSpecification belongs to Place. So the clinic carries both types, and that's the first thing my structured data services check on a vet site. Only a true 24-hour hospital adds EmergencyService.

// the abvma

Advertising rules, and the ones outside the text

The Veterinary Profession General Regulation lets vets advertise within its terms (s. 27), bars guaranteeing a cure (s. 45) and limits remedy testimonials (s. 44). Council rules under s. 28 aren't in that text, so I clear fees and promotions with the ABVMA first.

// pet health

Health articles with a vet's name on them

Pet health advice is health advice. Each article names its reviewing vet and date, and none gives dosing instructions.

// vet advertising - verified and not

Fees, reviews and promotions: what could I verify?

My plain reading of the Veterinary Profession Act, Google's contribution policy and the Competition Bureau. It isn't legal advice.

// check first

Cleared with you and the ABVMA first

  • Published fees. Bill 31 proposed some fee advertising in 2017; what's in force now, I couldn't confirm
  • Discounts, wellness-plan offers and first-visit promotions
  • Specialist or referral wording on a general practice's site
// built in

Built into every page I write

  • Review requests with no incentive attached, as Google's policy asks
  • No staff reviews without the connection disclosed, which the Competition Bureau warns about
  • No dosing advice, and a named vet on every health article

Why no vet clinic case yet?

The card below isn't veterinary: it's a health practice on WordPress, shown for how its phone searchers behave.

// where the vet pack isn't settled

In which three Alberta towns is the vet pack still open?

Banff is the one wide-open vet pack, with 5 reviews at #1. Camrose and Whitecourt are contested. And in mature St. Albert, #1 had 12 reviews while a clinic lower down held 740.

The cities are where reviews weigh most: Calgary's #1 clinic has 932 reviews, level with the pack median, and Edmonton's has 1,600 with another clinic at 2,300. That's why a city clinic's plan starts with after-hours and species pages, not the review count.

// veterinary - questions before you hire

Veterinary SEO questions, answered

Is veterinary SEO different from SEO for other clinics?

The basics are the same. What differs is the rulebook (the Veterinary Profession General Regulation, not CPSA), the after-hours, species and farm-call searches, and a schema type that can't carry opening hours on its own.

Should a vet clinic have an emergency page if it isn't open 24 hours?

Yes. An honest after-hours page gives your hours and sends owners to the nearest emergency hospital. In Calgary it matches the plain city search, and a clear answer can spare you angry reviews.

What schema should a veterinary clinic use?

VeterinaryCare co-typed with LocalBusiness, since VeterinaryCare alone sits under MedicalOrganization and can't hold opening hours. Add EmergencyService only if you're open 24 hours.

Can Alberta vets advertise their prices?

The regulation bars guaranteeing a cure but doesn't settle fees, and any Council rules under s. 28 aren't in its text. Ask the ABVMA first; I'll write to their answer.

Are the pet health articles from my website provider hurting SEO?

They aren't helping. When one article sits word for word on many clinics' sites, Google usually shows one copy. I'll rewrite the ones that matter.

How long does veterinary SEO take?

Give on-page fixes four to eight weeks before a first honest review, since each changed page needs a recrawl. The map pack moves slower, and I won't put a date on it. In a mature vet pack, I'd expect the after-hours and species pages to move first.

Do directories and links help a vet clinic?

They back up your profile: the same name, address, phone and hours on every listing, and links from shelters, rescues and local press you already work with. Google counts buying links for ranking as link spam, so I won't buy them.

Can I do veterinary SEO myself?

Some of it, yes: keep your hours identical everywhere, answer reviews, and write a page for each species and service you really offer. The schema, duplicate vendor articles and a move off a vendor template are the parts I'd take on for you.
