// the paradox

Can a website with 22 clicks a quarter still win high-value work?

Arch and Handle is an interior design and architecture firm working the Washington DC area. Over the quarter its site took 22 clicks from search. By any traffic measure that's barely a website.

Two days after this window closed, on 13 September, the qualifying form produced a commercial enquiry for Bethesda and Chevy Chase, budget $50,000 to $150,000. The enquiry record doesn't show where the visitor came from, so I won't tell you it came from search. What it does show is a small site with the right form still getting the right enquiry. For a design firm, one project like that is worth more than a thousand casual visitors. Traffic isn't the goal. The right enquiry is.

How does a qualifying enquiry form filter design leads?

  1. i.

    Project type

    Commercial, residential or hospitality, so the firm knows which kind of job it's quoting before it replies.

  2. ii.

    Location or area

    Bethesda and Chevy Chase in this case, which confirms the job is somewhere the firm works.

  3. iii.

    Budget band

    A range, not an open box, so a $5,000 refresh and a $150,000 fit-out don't land in the same inbox looking the same.

  4. iv.

    Timeline and message

    One to three months here, plus the project in the client's own words.

// the problem

Why isn't the Arch and Handle website ranking yet?

The live homepage makes it hard. It carries 204 words, two H1 tags where there should be one, and 11 of its 15 images have no alt text, which leaves image search nothing to go on. Writing alt text that helps image search is the quickest of those three fixes. The whole site is 16 URLs. There isn't enough on it for Google to understand what the firm does, where, or for whom.

The queries show Google trying anyway. 'Hospitality architecture services' reaches position 83.3, 'hospitality design experts washington dc' 39.0, 'dc interior design firms' 10.0. The subject matter is right. The pages aren't strong enough to carry it.

// the searches

What do people search when they're looking for a DC design firm?

Every one of these took zero clicks this quarter. They're still the most useful list on the page, because they're the searches the site needs to earn.

Why does a renovation timeline article rank at 6.4 when service pages don't?

The article on home renovation timelines in Washington DC ranks at 6.4. The hospitality design service page ranks at 27.3 and the residential design page at 27.9.

Specific, local, question-shaped content ranks faster than broad service pages, because fewer firms answer the question and the answer is useful. A homeowner asking how long a DC renovation takes is also someone planning one.

// what would work

What would move an interior design firm's website onto page one?

i.

A homepage worth ranking

Real copy about the firm's work and the areas it serves, one H1, and alt text on every image.

ii.

Service pages by area

The enquiry came from Bethesda and Chevy Chase. Pages for commercial and hospitality design there would match what that client searched.

iii.

An area page with content

/area-we-serve/ draws 231 impressions at position 53.5. It needs to say something about each area, not just list them.

iv.

Projects as case studies

Finished work, photographed and written up, is the strongest page a design firm can publish.

// the evidence

What did a $50,000 to $150,000 enquiry actually look like?

A redacted site enquiry: commercial interior design in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, $50K to $150K
// The enquirer's name, email, phone, message and IP address are redacted. It's the budget band that's the point.
// the lessons

What does the Arch and Handle case study teach?

Three things this project shows that apply well beyond this one site, each backed by a number above.

i.

One right enquiry beats a lot of traffic

The site took 22 search clicks in a quarter, and two days after that window its qualifying form brought in a commercial design enquiry with a $50,000 to $150,000 budget.

ii.

A thin homepage holds every page back

204 words and two H1 tags give Google too little to rank the firm's service pages, which sit at 27.3 and 27.9.

iii.

Local questions rank before service pages

The DC renovation timeline article ranks at 6.4, well ahead of the service pages, because fewer firms answer the question.

// the number that isn't good yet

What won't this case study claim?

Average position 33.2 is page four, and the trend through September's flat rather than climbing. This site isn't ranking yet and this page won't pretend otherwise. What it shows is that the conversion path works. The traffic's the open problem.

// questions

What do people ask about interior design SEO?

How do interior design firms get leads from their website?

A qualifying enquiry form helps more than raw traffic. Arch and Handle took 22 search clicks in a quarter, and two days after that window its form brought in a commercial interior design enquiry with a $50,000 to $150,000 budget.

Why isn't my interior design website ranking on Google?

Thin pages are the usual cause. Arch and Handle's homepage has 204 words, two H1 tags and 11 of 15 images without alt text, across a 16 URL site, which gives Google too little to rank.

What should an interior design enquiry form ask?

Project type, location, budget band, timeline and a description. A budget range lets a firm tell a large commercial fit-out from a small refresh before replying.

Does blog content help an architecture or design firm rank?

Yes, when it's specific and local. Arch and Handle's article on DC renovation timelines ranks at 6.4, well above its hospitality and residential service pages at 27.3 and 27.9.

How many clicks does a design firm need from search?

There's no fixed number. Arch and Handle's site took 22 search clicks a quarter, and its qualifying form still brought in a $50,000 to $150,000 enquiry, though the record doesn't show whether that visitor came from search. What decides it is whether the right visitors can turn into enquiries.

// how this was measured

Where do these numbers come from?

Every figure on this page was pulled from https://archandhandle.com/ through the Google Search Console API, over 13 June to 11 September 2026. The tables weren't typed off the screenshot. Where the picture shows a slightly different number, it's because it was captured at a different time from the API pull, so its date range doesn't line up exactly with the window.

The technical details, the schema types, sitemap size, image alt text and redirects, were read off the live site on 15 September 2026. Nothing here is modelled, estimated or averaged across clients, and there's no percentage without the number it's a percentage of.

That's the same technical SEO audit your site would get. You'd see the number that's working and the one that isn't, with the window stated, so you can check it in your own Search Console.
